Algorithms for Dementia Imaging

December 12 08:00 December 13 17:00 CET

An application has been submitted to the UEMS EACCME for CME accreditation.

The course will offer a comprehensive overview of basic, theoretical and practical evidence-based concepts needed for a deep and thoughtful understanding of the use of [¹⁸F]FDG (FDG) Brain PET, amyloid (Amy) PET and DaT SPECT in Neurological Disorders. A brief introduction will be given on the position that each imaging technique holds in the recent European intersocietal recommendations for the biomarker-based diagnosis of neurocognitive disorders. Then, short theoretical sessions on visual reading and semiquantification of FDG PET, Amy PET and DaT SPECT will be associated with longer hands-on sessions, for a practice-oriented learning specifically addressed to dementing disorders and neurodegenerative parkinsonian syndromes. Different approaches for semiquantification and subsequent scan reporting will be proposed and discussed. Clinical cases will be the starting point to better define the usefulness, utility and accurate reading of PET and SPECT in Alzheimer’s disease, other neurodegenerative dementias and Parkinsonian Syndrome.n coming soon

Learning Objectives

  • To familiarise with the neuroimaging tools available to objectively assess brain glucose metabolism, amyloid deposition and dopaminergic system integrity, and their position in recent European recommendations
  • To learn strengths and weaknesses of different approaches for semiquantification
  • To appropriately choose a semi-quantitative support for image interpretation in various conditions
  • The course will provide important information on the most recent developments for an improved clinical practice, of utmost importance for nuclear medicine physicians.

Target Audience

  • General nuclear medicine specialists, radiologists who want to update their knowledge on reading, semiquantification and reporting of FDG PET, Amy PET and DaT SPECT in terms of clinical indications, reading skills and pitfalls. The constantly evolving role of Brain PET in neurodegenerative disorders makes the track of interest also for neurologists who want to improve their knowledge of cutting-edge Neuroimaging tools.
